DIFFERENT TYPES OF MIGRAINES

Migraines can take many different forms and can have a significant impact on an individual's life.1 By understanding the different types of migraines, individuals can work with their healthcare providers to develop a comprehensive treatment plan tailored to their specific needs.1

There are several variations of migraines, each with its own unique set of symptoms and characteristics:

MIGRAINE WITHOUT AURA:

This is the most common type of migraine and is characterised by moderate to severe headache pain that may be accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light and sound.2,3

MIGRAINE WITH AURA:

A type of migraine that is accompanied by sensory disturbances, such as visual or auditory hallucinations, or tingling sensations in the limbs.2, 3 These symptoms, known as aura, can occur before or during a migraine attack.2, 3

HEMIPLEGIC MIGRAINE:

A rare type of migraine that can cause temporary paralysis or weakness on one side of the body.2 Other symptoms may include vision changes, confusion, and difficulty speaking.4

MIGRAINE LET-DOWN HEADACHE:

A type of migraine that occurs after a period of stress or tension has been released, such as after an important event or deadline.1

RETINAL MIGRAINE:

A type of migraine that affects vision in one eye.2 Symptoms may include temporary blindness or vision loss, as well as other visual disturbances.1

SILENT MIGRAINE: 

A type of migraine without headache pain.1 Instead, individuals may experience symptoms such as aura, nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light and sound, without the accompanying head pain.1

CHRONIC MIGRAINE: 

Defined as headache pain that occur on 15 or more days per month for at least three months.2,3 Chronic migraines can be particularly debilitating and can have a significant impact on an individual's quality of life.5
